Seems a little ridiculous that they want you to buy a game that you already own just for convenience of play.

I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to have everything on my HD and not need the disc. I've already bought the game. I legally own it.

This is the reason people look into hacking and modding their systems.

Thzts how all consoles are

You cam sell off your disks at anytime there is no registration code

And you could do unlimited installs on friends consoles there is no point im thst

Actually yes there is a point in that it doesnt seem rediculous at all its an anti theft measure of you want a no disk option your only choice is digital

Modijg a console not have to do that gets you banned on any console from their online service

I love how the honest, law abiding citizens are always penalized for what the unethical people might do.

Yet you are rhe one that is refering to shaddy. Methods

There is no lawful way to copy a disc based console game into a console

All consoles require disk validation

If you want diskless your only legal option is to buy digital

Only pc games have options to install but most still require disk validation

You are looking at the wrong market

If you want disklesss option then digital is the only way

There is no lawful method in any region to backup any gane onto a hd

I didn't say I would do it, I said I can see how some people would be tempted because of these dumb limitations.

If I buy a cd I can legally copy it to my HD, I can make a copy for back up in case I scratch it as well.

I'm sure music is a bigger market for piracy, but I still can back up something I've paid for already.

Right now I've got one game that the disc got so scratched that it won't read. I can't play that game any more without purchasing it again. Had I been able to back it up I could still play it.

I just think it's less about piracy as those people will find a way if they want it bad enough, and more about the big corporations knowing that young kids won't take care of them and parents will be forced to keep buying the same game over and over.

If I purchased it legally I should be able to protect my investment by backing it up.

If you had installed that game prior to the scratch, you could still play it.

Once installed the xbox only needs to read the discs security code.

You could borrow or rent that game again, install it and then use your copy again.

If you could do what you are asking and back up all your games to your drive, you would never buy retail games again, no one would.

All we would do is rent or borrow games, install them and return them.

The video game industry would die a quick death.

@allarian you forget there is no legal right to backup anytingWhat you are quoting is a misquote

Fair use is a suggestion not an actual law

Piracy is not legal in any country

You are only allowed to backup approved methods ij current case by not self back uo but the shipping ccst of the disk at most publishers available at 20 bucks a pop

Rherr is no legal way to backup disks doing so without the consent of rhe publisher is a violation of the international laws

Music is not the same as software

You may not bypass the drm controls and are enforced by international laws

Fairuse wasnt extended to dvds or games if they circumvent drm rules of the systeems so again there is no legal way

"Law abiding citizens"? Get off your rear, it's a disc. You can't play discless unless it's a Game On Demand. If you're that lazy then consider purchasing your discs in digital format. It's not a dumb limitation. It's like buying a shirt and then saying you don't want to wear it because it's "protecting your investment". You buy something, you use it, regular wear and tear breaks it. Even having discs sit there--eventually the plastic will fall apart. Either you want to use it or you don't. Piracy isn't "tempting". Frankly the amount of work it takes to get pirated copies working, and staying ahead of DRM is beyond what any "lazy" person like you would do.

If you could install games and play without the disc even law abiding citizens would abuse it.

Borrow or rent a disc, install it then get the game for free. Developers and publishers would go bankrupt and there would be no more games being made.

As  for needing to backup. Just look after your discs. Put them back in the case when not using them. My games I had 9 years ago when 360 first launched still work and have no scratches. I even have games for the original xbox that are over 10 years old I still play occasionally  and they work fine..
